IN YOUR NAME

is a feature documentary that mirrors my encounter as I lived in Egypt, with Jewish women who never left their country amid a mass exodus; And the fading story of my paternal family, who, forced into exile, left Egypt for Israel.

Years later, at the death of his own, my father changed his family name from a Jewish sephardic name to an Israeli one. Only my sister and I bear this name in our family. Being born in France but with nothing in my name to signal it, it took me decades to navigate an identity which felt fractured and bipolar. The film thus begins with this wounded heritage and the early sense that my Egyptian Jewish identity required a choice to be made, as if the elements that comprised it remained incompatible.

While my grandfather died of his forced exile from Egypt, my father never understood my choice to live in the country that rejected him. He did everything he could to get me to come home.
